What is the language course visa?

The language course visa (visa for the purpose of language acquisition under Section 16f of the Residence Act) allows non-EU citizens to come to Germany for the duration of an intensive German course. A key requirement is an intensive or super-intensive course with normally at least 18 teaching hours per week.

Evening and weekend courses are usually not sufficient for this type of visa. That is why we only offer and arrange visa-compliant German courses in Nuremberg in intensive and super-intensive formats.

Duration, extension and possible follow-up options

The language course visa is normally issued for the duration of the booked course, up to a maximum of 12 months. An extension is possible if you remain enrolled in an intensive course, can demonstrate progress and have sufficient financial means.

What type of visa is this and which residence titles can it be converted into?

The language course visa under Section 16f of the Residence Act is a national visa (D visa) issued for the purpose of language learning. It generally only permits participation in an intensive language course and usually allows limited secondary employment of up to 20 hours per week.

After successful completion of the course or once the respective requirements are met, this visa can in practice be converted into the following residence titles:

• Student visa / residence permit for studies (Section 16b Residence Act) – if you have an admission letter from a German university
• Visa / residence permit for employment (e.g. skilled worker with vocational or academic qualification) – with a corresponding job offer and qualifications
• Opportunity Card or other options under the skilled immigration rules – depending on individual points and requirements
• In individual cases also other residence titles, provided the legal conditions are fulfilled

Conversion is not automatic and depends on the specific documents, your progress and the decision of the responsible immigration authority. We advise you transparently and realistically on this.

• Daily in-person classes
• Levels from A1 to C1
• Official course confirmation accepted by German missions abroad
